The manufacturing history of Ekornes was established back in 1934 by Norwegian Jens Ekornes. He started out by creating steel spring components for furniture manufacturers in a small shop in Sunnmøre, Norway. It was here that Jens Ekornes would soon begin looking for bigger challenges and better design innovations. He would travel to various trade shows and furniture exhibitions throughout Europe in search of finding inspiration for building a better mattress. He would soon discover that sofa steel springs that were designed to be linked together could also be used in mattresses and so he developed this system for his Svane mattress line.
After World War 2, Jens Ekornes travelled to the United States so that he could learn more about his trade. He would purchase American machinery to take back to Norway and hired an expert from the USA to come back with him to train and educate his workers on how to use it. Technological innovation became a cornerstone for Jens Ekornes both in the way his company would grow and move forward in the production process. The early success with Svane mattresses would lead Jens Ekornes to begin developing furniture components for other furniture manufacturers between 1947 to 1959. Many of these initiatives would include working with foamed plastics, wood as well as steel components.
In 1966 Ekornes would introduce their own new line of club furniture that would simply be called Ekornes. This furniture was promoted through a national mailer to every home in Norway and met with much success in establishing Ekornes as a household name. With a furniture manufacturing infrastructure in place Jens Ekornes could move forward with producing these new lines of furniture as well as introduce new ones. In 1971, Ekornes would go on to introduce a new line of reclining chair. This furniture would be called Stressless and would change the way people think about recliners. The Stressless recliner offered several new patented innovations unique to the Stressless recliner. These new features included a lower lumbar support, unique glide system and head support plus system that allows the chair to move with you and provide proper neck and back support. With these new innovations and the expansion of it's steel and automation departments Ekornes would be able to keep up with demand internationally. In 1980, the Ekornes brand would go global and begin exporting to other countries around the world.
Today, Ekornes Stressless products are sold throughout five different continents and in over thirty countries world wide. The legacy of Jens Ekornes continues to this day as Ekornes continues to look for new ways to build a better product and create design innovations in every piece of furniture that will surely find their way into living rooms and family rooms throughout the world.
