Cash for Clunkers Dealer Registration Website Plagued With Outages

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 24, 2009 – Car dealers across the country have expressed their early frustration with trying to register their dealer for the NHTSA Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) also known as the Cash for Clunkers program.  Due to online registration problems and recently announced dealer requirements the NHTSA has moved the official start date of the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) to July 27th.
Car dealers have been trying to register for since early this morning with no success. Many have been unsuccessful given the sheer volume of traffic being directed to the NHTSA website.  Slow response times and error pages are all most dealers have received so far.  
Although many dealers are expressing frustration, some seemed prepared for the hassle.  Kevin Frye of the Jeff Wyler Automotive Family seemed to take it all in stride.  According to Frye, “With 25,000 dealers all attempting to register at the same time, this is certainly not unexpected.”
Preston Auto Group in Maryland had begun accepting trade-ins in the beginning of July.  Brent Durham, Internet Sales Manager, said the delay was disappointing.   “Being that we started accepting trade-ins in the beginning of July, we were really looking forward to getting registered today so we could start the process of getting our refunds on Monday.  Right now it looks like we will have to wait a few more days.”  
Hagen Durant, General Manager of Classic Chevrolet in Texas also commented on his

experience trying to register his dealership, “It seemed like the website couldn’t handle the volume of traffic it received or perhaps they just weren’t fully prepared.  Now that we have the official guidelines, we can at least start accepting deals even though we couldn’t get registered.  It’s a little bit of a burden on dealers, but I do believe once this gets going we will get the benefit from it.”
Many dealers across the nation are undoubtedly experiencing the same frustration as thousands try to register.  There was concern over how the NHTSA would register the thousands of dealerships across the country in one day.  Right now, there is no other choice for dealers who have been unsuccessful at registering to keep trying.
The NHTSA has indicated to the automotive industry that on Friday night at midnight the website would be taken down to undergo a server upgrade.  The new web server is designed to handle the high need to accommodate thousands of simultaneous connections.

How Severe Is My Ankle Sprain?

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 15, 2009 – Spraining your ankle is the most common ankle injury, and it occurs when the ligaments in the ankle are either torn or stretched beyond their limit.  People who have suffered from sprained ankles in the past have a higher risk of re-spraining their ankle in the future.  Other people who have a high risk for ankle sprains are those with weak leg muscles or unsteady feet (i.e., feet that tend to “roll over”).  
Ankle sprains run the gamut from injuries that you can “walk-off” to injuries that require surgery.  Sprains are usually classified into three degrees.
If you notice swelling and mild pain in your ankle, but are still able to bear some weight on your foot, you most likely have a first degree ankle sprain.  This is the most minor form of the injury and usually results from overstretching the ligament.  The best way to treat a first degree ankle sprain is with R.I.C.E..  This helpful acronym stands for Rest, Ice, Compression (usually with the help of a compressive bandage) and Elevation.  If you think you’ve sprained your ankle, start R.I.C.E. immediately.  Give your foot several days rest, elevate and ice the ankle as much as possible and wear a compressive bandage at all times.  Your ankle should be back to normal in a few days.
Second degree ankle sprains are characterized by moderate to severe pain, swelling and stiffness.  The best way to tell the difference between a first and second degree sprain is by the amount of weight you are able to put on your foot.  Sprained ankles that can bear some weight are generally first degree; people with second degree sprains find it extremely painful to put even a little bit of weight on their ankle.  In addition to R.I.C.E., ankles with second degree sprains may need to be splinted.  Crutches may also be necessary to help the injured person get around.  
Third degree sprains are characterized by severe pain followed by no pain at all.  They occur when the ligament is torn.  Symptoms include severe swelling and complete dysfunction of the joint.  R.I.C.E. is still a good starting point when it comes to treating third degree sprains.  But a doctor should be consulted immediately, and the injured party should be prepared to undergo surgery or have their ankle put in a cast for several weeks.

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 11, 2009 – If you are looking for an orthopedic shoe that will help relieve pain in your feet (or prevent certain foot deformities or injuries from getting worse), it’s important to look for key characteristics in each area of the shoe: the outsole, the insole and the upper.  Think of it as your orthopedic shoe checklist.  
The Outsole.  When it comes to the outsole of an orthopedic shoe, look for features that promote a smooth ride from heel to toe.  A flared outsole will give the foot stability, while a sole made from polyurethane will absorb shock and help give the foot traction that will prevent slips and falls.  The outsole should have a slight heel (somewhere between ¾ of an inch and 1 ½ inches), which will lift the foot slightly without throwing the foot’s natural position off balance.  
The Insole.  Insoles should be removable so that you can adjust the size of the shoe when the foot swells and accommodate orthotic devices.  Removable insoles will also help you keep your shoes clean and dry.  A plastizote foam lining will mold to the foot’s shape and should reduce pressure on high-stress areas of the foot.
The Upper.  The shoe’s upper should be made from a breathable material.  Look for canvas shoes, or shoes with mesh air-circulation pockets.  Leather shoes normally allow air to circulate (although beware of leather shoes that are lined with a plastic non-breathable material) but they can also cause the foot to sweat.  Extra padding around the tongue and collar of the shoe increases comfort and prevents irritation of the foot in these sensitive areas.  Shoes that close with Velcro make for easy size adjustments.  
A good example of a quality orthopedic shoe that meets the above requirements is the Beata by Mephisto.  This Women’s slide-on sneaker comes with a removable anatomical footbed that is designed to fit the contours of the bottom of your foot.  This footbed provides excellent shock absorption, but it can be replaced by orthotics if you need customized support.  The sneaker is designed with bi-lateral stabilizers and is lined with waterproof (yet breathable!) GORE-TEX.  A rubber sole provides excellent traction, and the shoe is designed with a slight heel and arch support, which should help to reduce heel and arch pain.
