Northwood Dealer Education Award Presented to Virginia Hyundai Owner

For the past 39 years, Northwood University has recognized individuals in the retail auto industry who have made noteworthy contributions to education, public or private, at any level, inside or outside the automobile business.
Mr. Reilly is a graduate of Georgetown University, and holds a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, and an MBA from Duke University.
Mr. Reilly was appointed to Motor Vehicle Dealer Board by Governor Warner in 2005, and was re-appointed for another four-year term in 2009.  He has served as Chairman of the Franchise Committee and currently serves as Chairman of the Dealer Practices Committee, whose pivotal role is to educate and inform dealers on their obligations to consumers.
Recently, Mr. Reilly played a key role in the government’s widely successful CARS program, better known as Cash for Clunkers. Mr. Reilly served as dealer liaison to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and helped refine the dealer submission, re-submission and approval process. He also participated as a principal speaker on NADA “Cash-for-Clunkers” webinars, educating thousands of dealers on how to successfully navigate the Cash-for-Clunkers submission process.
Mr. Reilly has been WANADA’s spokesperson to the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s (WRAP) Sober Ride campaign on St. Patrick’s Day, which has significantly reduced the number of drunk drivers on the roads during this holiday.
Mr. Reilly has been a consistent supporter of education in Alexandria and has received the Hopkins House “Heart of Community” Award for his contributions to the City of Alexandria.

Ski Slang. The language of the sweet cherry pow pow.

PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 16, 2009 – When enough people do something for a long enough period of time it's inevitable that a certain language evolves around the activity.  Skiing is a good example where most of us learn in our first lesson to do a snowplow.  I simple way to stop or slow yourself down going downhill.  When we fail to remember the snowplow we're allowed to learn a whole new set of words like buttslide, ragdoll, and screaming starfish.  In case you're wondering those are various ways of describing the way we fall, crash and smash into things.  And some of those things are truly memorable.
   If you take a flier after hitting some rocks protruding from the snow you've found some chocolate chips.  And yes, there really are snow cookies.  They're small chunks of hard snow that have frozen into the powder.  Larger chunks of frozen slush protruding like razors are frozen chicken heads.  Hmmm, there's a certain attitude here.  Maybe it's the result of too many face plants on the snow farm.
   Oh, and if you come across a day of fresh powder snow it's not powder it's pow.  If you come across a stretch of pow that no one has skied, well that's where the phrase sweet cherry pow pow comes from.  If you love wallowing in the deep, white stuff while you ski you're a powder pig.  This is much better than skiing in wet, heavy, clumpy mashed potato-like snow commonly referred to as crud.
   But it's not just about the snow, it's about the people two-planking it down the slopes.
For those of us that still forget how to stop we often fall and lose our gloves, hat and goggles.  That's called a yard sale.  Do all of that and lose your ski's or snowboard too and you've got a garage sale.  Do it all on your face and you've got a face plant.  All things considered I'd rather do the butt plant.  But, If you butt plant and keep going that's a butt slide.  
   While skiers have done an admirable job of developing much of this language, the snowboarders seem to have found new extremes.  Consider this exchange overheard just recently:
   RIDER:  "Did you see that dude get krunked on that snowmine?"                                                      
   GRUM:  "Yeah, that's the same raptor who packed that snow bank into a squirrel's nest."          
   RIDER:  "Yeah, rollin' down the windows all the way man."
   GRUM:  "What a muffin scorcher."
   In case you're wondering here's the translation:
   RIDER:  "Did you see that guy get knocked out when he hit that rock under the snow?"                                                        
   GRUM:  "That's the same guy who went down the hill with his arms out like a bird before he fell into the deep snow of that snow bank."
   RIDER:  "Yeah, he was waving his arms in the air the whole way."
   GRUM:  "And then he rode down the rest on his butt."
   Not to be outdone, skiers have joined the fray.  If you fall and your head gets stuck in the snow and you can't get out, most of your friends will call you a thumb tack before they grab your skis and pull you out.  Of course if they decide to all stand around and the bottom of the hill and laugh about your splat there will be many people at the top of the hill wondering why so many people are in the way.  This will result in them calling you vermin or if they decide to ski through your group bowling pins or roadkill.  If that happens you might just want to hope they still remember that snow plow.

This awesome show ended with a Christmas song featuring the Performance Camp Vocalists, Megan, Erika and Alex and the rest of the crew, "fabulous" said one on-looker.  The Rockingham crowds had plenty of cheers for all the performers and many came over to inquire about Gift Certificates and Lessons for their kids.

Alternately titled “| Gorros, Guantes, Chocolate Caliente Con Amor,” Gretchen’s book is very unique because of the Spanish translation that follows along with the English text.  “Since most of my family still resides in the Dominican Republic, I decided to include the Spanish translation, not only so my family could enjoy the book but to also help them learn some new English words. And, this book is a great educational tool for introducing Spanish to young children without overwhelming them, and great for Spanish departments in schools as a teaching aid.”
Gretchen decided to self-publish her book after doing some research on traditional publishing.  Finding and securing a traditional publishing contract in this economy is difficult because fewer books are being published.  Plus, with lag times of 9 to 18 months, it would be quite some time before the finished book would be in readers’ hands with a traditional publisher.  So, after doing a bit of research, Gretchen worked with a local printer to help bring her vision to life.

15% Petrol Price Hike Presents High Street Christmas Shoppers with £78 Million Bill

PR Log (Press Release) – Nov 30, 2009 – Soaring fuel prices are forcing more consumers to shop on their computers rather than on the high street this Christmas, according to independent price comparison and switching service, uSwitch.com. A 15% rise in petrol prices since last November has pushed the bill for driving to the shops and parking the car up to a staggering £78 million – and that’s before any presents have been bought. As a result, despite the postal strikes that were widely predicted to drive consumers back onto the high street, research amongst uSwitch.com’s consumer panel reveals that over 7 out of 10 (72%) people are doing their Christmas shopping online this year.
The price of petrol, which has climbed from 95p to 109p per litre over the last 12 months has done nothing to help consumers struggling through a tough year. While pressure remains on oil companies to lower prices, the situation is not set to improve imminently. The AA has warned that end of the VAT cut will add an estimated 2.4p per litre to pump prices from January. As a result, shoppers heading onto the high street this Christmas could face fuel bills of up to £8million.
However, it is the cost of car parking that is really set to send shoppers in a spin this Christmas. With the average trip costing £9 in parking fees, consumers will be spending a staggering £70 million parking their cars to go Christmas shopping this year - nearly 10 times the cost of the fuel they use for their round trip. Of the UK’s top ten largest cities it comes as no surprise that Londoners are stung the most, paying an average of £18 for up to four hours parking, while shoppers in Bradford are charged a fifth of the price - a meagre £3.50.

In addition, nearly three quarters of consumers (72%) state that they find it easier to stick to a budget when shopping online – as they are more aware of the mounting totals and are less likely to succumb to the temptation of browsing.  Books are the most popular items purchased on the web – hardly surprising considering the top ten bestselling paperbacks are currently offered online with a 55% discount on the recommended retail price.
Online retailers have seen a 14% growth in year on year sales with UK consumers spending an estimated £31 billion  online between January and August.  Amazon ranked as the number one online retailer last Christmas, and with new initiatives such as free delivery on almost all orders, looks set to hit the 36% sales growth forecast for Q4 this year.
London and Northern Ireland lead the way when it comes to online bargain hunting, spending an average of 1.48 hours shopping online every week. This is closely followed by Wales (1.46 hours), the South West (1.43), and Scotland (1.41 hours). Web users in the North East are the least frequent online shoppers, spending just 1.23 hours a week browsing for bargains.

What you need to know before buying HDMI and HDMI cables?

PR Log (Press Release) – Nov 24, 2009 – High Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI , is hailed as the next generation of audiovisual cabling. Simply put, HDMI is an all-digital connector that can carry high definition video and several digital audio channels all on the one cable. HDMI was first officially unveiled in 2003, but it's only now that we're starting to see widespread support for the standard. Is it something you should be seeking out?

2. How is it different from my current analog cables?
Analog video cables, such as component, composite or S-Video, are currently the main methods used to transfer picture signals in an average home system. Component is the highest quality analog cable as it breaks down the picture signal into three different cables — one each for red, blue and green. When you've got analog cabling connecting digital sources (such as an LCD or plasma screen with a DVD), the digital video or sound signals have to be converted into analog to travel through the cable, before being re-converted back into digital at the receiving end. This could lead to some signal degradation and a resulting loss in output quality.
3. What are the advantages of going digital with HDMI?
HDMI can deliver high quality sound or vision without the risk of quality loss due to the conversion or compression of a video or audio signal. HDMI pictures should be smoother and sharper, with a distinct reduction in video noise. Sound should be crisp and taut, without any distortion. And of course, using the single cable HDMI can get rid of a lot of messy cables snaking around your home theatre kit.
HDMI has become the standard audio and video connection for high-definition home theater gear. Every new HDTV has at least two HDMI inputs, and gadgets such as DVRs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, game consoles, and computers feature HDMI outputs to deliver audio and video.
Because of its digital nature, HDMI also works well with fixed-pixel displays such as LCD, plasma or DLP screens and projectors. A HDMI cable allows you to exactly match pixel-by pixel the native resolution of the screen with whatever source device you've got connected. HDMI systems will also automatically convert a picture into its most appropriate format, such as 16:9 or 4:3.
HDMI has some built-in smarts that allow you to control any device connected via HDMI through the one remote. Since the HDMI connection allows two-way communication between devices, it gives you basic universal remote-like functions which, for example, can tell the components in an HDMI-linked system to turn on when you want to watch a DVD, just with the press of a button.
4. How does DVI fit into the equation? Is it better than HDMI?
You may have heard of digital video interface (DVI), which is another all-digital connector for video. DVI has been around for longer, and can be found in many more televisions and other devices than HDMI. DVI was initially developed as a connector between PCs and monitors, but eventually found its way into the home entertainment world.

The HDMI standard is actually based on DVI, so picture quality should be identical. Where HDMI has it over DVI is its audio capabilities — DVI can only carry video signals. HDMI cables can also be made longer than DVI — HDMI can go up to 15m in length. And from an aesthetic viewpoint, HDMI connectors are less bulky than DVI ones. HDMI connects like a USB device for PCs, while DVI still has screw pins on its connector. However, this means that HDMI connections are more prone to damage from accidental knocks so more care needs to be taken with them.
5. I've got some gear with DVI connectors. Will they work with HDMI?
As HDMI is fully backwards compatible with DVI, so you won't be making your DVI products obsolete if you buy something with an HDMI connector. For example, HDMI televisions will display video received from existing DVI-equipped products, while a HDMI DVD player will play on a DVI-equipped television. All you'll need is a HDMI/DVI adaptor. Just be aware that doing this will lose you the added functionality of HDMI, such as automatic screen format conversion and universal remote control.
6. What products support HDMI?
HDMI has been on the market for a while now, and most new DVD players, set-top boxes and TVs feature at least one HDMI port.

On the display side of the equation, most new screens, projectors and DVD players support the standard. If you're looking to buy a device like a TV or AV receiver look for the most HDMI ports yu can afford. Three is the minimum you should expect from today's devices, while DVD players and the like only usually require one output. Also, be aware that an HDMI port currently only sends information in one direction -- though there are moves to change this in the future. As a result, it's not possible to use a HDMI output port on a PC, for example, to display a PS3 signal.
7. Where can I get HDMI cables?
If you own a component with HDMI but don't have a cable for it, then there are several cable manufacturers who sell HDMI gear. Belkin, for example, sell HDMI cables and HDMI to DVI cables under their Pure AV range of interconnects. Monster Cable also has a comprehensive selection of HDMI products. HDMI cables and adapters by Monster Cable have been developed in a joint partnership with HDMI's founder, Silicon Image. Don't expect these cables to be too cheap, though: you'll need to spend at least $70 to get a cable of sufficient quality.

8. What do the different versions mean?
While the latest version of HDMI is up to 1.3c, but there are four main versions that most equipment will correspond to — 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3. Notice that the versions signify changes to the types of audio they can transmit, as all versions should be able to transmit HD video up to 1080p.
1.0 This is the first version of HDMI and it was ratified in late 2002. It will decode most versions of audio contained in DVD and digital TV signals, including Dolby Digital and DTS.
1.1 This version added DVD-Audio support, which means users with compatible disks and players can listen to 5.1 channel audio streams without the need for six separate audio RCA cables.
1.2/1.2a The main improvement on 1.1 is the addition of Super Audio CD (SACD) support, which means users no longer need to rely on iLink or analog cables to listen to SACDs. The standard also adds support for an as-yet unused Type A PC connector.
1.3/1.3a/1.3b Version 1.3 adds support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio which are used in Blu-ray players. Increasingly, AV receivers are including decoding for these standards on board, while devices the PlayStation 3 will output a decoded signals. The 1.3 standard also increases the available bandwidth by a factor of two to 10Gbps. Though 1.3b and 1.3c exist they don't add any further functionality over 1.3a, and so are interchangeable.
9.What's this I hear about Wireless HDMI?
Eventually, every technology goes wireless, and with Wi-Fi and Wireless USB now in play it makes sense that manufacturers have turned their eyes to making HDMI clutter-free too. Only thing is, it doesn't work yet. Belkin showed off their FlyWire technology behind closed doors at CES 2008, and it hasn't been heard of since. There is, as yet, no standard for Wireless HDMI, and so it's not really worth holding out for. Also, Wireless HDMI is not to be confused with WirelessHD — this is a separate technology used by manufacturers such as Sony to send signals from a media box to slim, wall-mounted TVs.
