Everybody Hates Chris follows the everyday life of Chris, the eldest child of a black family with three minor children in Brooklyn, New York City in the early 80s.

In 1982, 13-year-old Chris enters adolescence with his cool boyhood dreams. However, the real life is not as interesting as he had expected. Living in Brooklyn, Chris has to take the responsibility as the eldest brother while parents are working outside. He has to take care of young brother Drew, who is taller and more like the elder brother, and the little sister Tonya.
Chris's father Julius is straightforward and fortitudinous. He emphasizes thrift and works serval jobs in order to support the family. Mother Rochelle is very strict with the children. She works part-time in a small property company. She rules the family with a stern discipline and demands the children to get the best care. So she decides to send Chris to a high school with strict demands on students. Chris has to agree grudingly.
Everyday Chris has to change buses several times to go to school. At school, Chris becomes the boy victimized by the schoolmates. However, by his personal attractiveness and swift wit, he makes friends with a boy named Grey who's unable to fight.
Gradually, Chris changes his vigorous and aggressive nature, At home, at school and on the way to school, Chris grows and grows. He must learn to think, talk and seize opportunity.
